 The Jeff Lords Brief:
"Having been around boats of one sort or another nearly all my life,  having built 2 and modified another, I currently own an aluminium
RANGER 3300 punt , which I am sorry I ever bought. I was after a lightweight plywood/composite boat, but after months of searching, I could not find what I wanted that would suit my needs.
What I was looking for was "V" nose tunnel hull punt, (a composite/ plywood design),  with large "V" chines to provide extra stability when fishing and also for the boat to sit level when beached. I had been toying with the idea of building a V Nose punt of my own design, but how do you know if the design will work, let alone can it be built?
It also had to be lightweight for its size, with a high freeboard, quick and easy in it's construction and easily handled by 2 people. Is this possible?   When I saw Marks web site and spoke to him, I asked him "Could he design the boat for me?". Well, I love what they've done! The interest shown in the design is great and it shows that Mark can turn a ham fisted amatuer designers sketch into a beautiful and sea worthy boat.
 We think it looks excellent."

Jeff Lord

The intial hand drawn sketch, that Jeff drew, of the Mangrove Jack

Hi all,
Well I managed to get another morning out in the Boat; I went out with an old work mate. Launched on the North Pine River at Deep water Bend, and proceeded to the Hornibrook hwy, chasing the FISH.
We tested the boat further and achieved 26-28 KPH at full throttle, with similar weight as on the first outing. This time I was not fighting wind & tide, so the boat is giving the speed calculated` by MARK
Well to cut to the chase, the boat handled very well , not 1 drop of salt water came over the side from slop or spray, and I was not being kind to the boat and pushed all the time, the only back off was for moored boats or when crossing the wakes from passing boats.
All in all very impressed the boat handles very well and does everything I have asked of it.
Regards,
Jeff

MATERIALS LIST FOR THE MANGROVE JACK 3.65

The following list of materials is approximate and intended for calculation of approximate costs. We offer no guarantees of accuracy.
The list is for all timber in the construction of hull, deck and interior, including building stocks, temporary bracing etc. Allowance has been made in the quantities for about 20% wastage. These figures allow for building with 1/4" (6mm) & 3/8" (9mm) plywood for the hull and interior.

CONSTRUCTION METHOD:
Built from marine or boatbuilding plywood and completely fibreglassed in an epoxy matrix both inside and outside, the Mangrove Jack 3.65 was designed for very easy building: no compound curves, no unnecessary complications, ease of construction, easy maintenance and a long life.

The 1/4" (6mm) panels, cut flat from our expanded plates dimensioned drawings, are bent around the frames and fastened to the transom and bow with stitches
The plans show all dimensions needed for each method: accurate expanded plates dimensions and all bulkheads and transom dimensions with spacing for building on strongbacks if desired.

With no lofting, beveling or scarfing required, the sides and bottom panels are cut from standard 8x4 plywood (1.2m x2.4m) and joined with a simple fiberglass butt block. All seams are then taped with fiberglass and epoxy (see our "Boatbuilding Forum " section for details.) As these epoxy joins are much stronger than the plywood, the assembled hull is then completely fibreglassed for extra strength and easy maintenance, resulting in a boat with less maintenance and a better finish than a production fiberglass hull.

The Mangrove Jack 3.65 "V" nose punt is designed for seaworthiness and stability  in mind, when on the move out fishing or crabbing. With her high topsides and swivel seats for comfort, the bench seats are designed to provide full buoyancy and storage compartments, capable of supporting the boat in the event of swamping. The large foredeck provides a great area for casting nets and storing the crab pots with easy access to the lockers beneath the foredeck.
Along the topsides panel, the Mangrove Jack includes built in plywood side pockets for all the fishing gear while the seating arrangements provide's ample leg room.
Overall the Mangrove Jack 3.65 "V" nose punt is designed to be very comfortable, stable and seaworthy, and most importantly-practical.

The brief called for interior to be clean and simple, loads of room and also storage. Emphasis was given to having higher than normal sides and comfortable seating arangements utilizing swivel seats, without having your knees in your face. Within the seat base there are 2 large sealed lockers, for all those items you may want locked away, while still retaining the foam filled buoyancy compartments in the outer seat sections and also shelving along the side walls for all those bits and pieces that you want handy when fishing. She also has a raised sole for fishing and casting. The large bow seat also doubles as an anchor / storage locker as well.

Overall, the design had to be kept simple, clean and functionable, for a great days fishing or simply out and about with the family.
