Builders Construction Manual

The Jeff Lords Brief:
"Having been around boats of one sort or another nearly all my life,  having built 2 and modified another, I currently own an aluminium
RANGER 3300 punt , which I am sorry I ever bought. I was after a lightweight plywood/composite boat, but after months of searching, I could not find what I wanted that would suit my needs.
What I was looking for was "V" nose tunnel hull punt, (a composite/ plywood design),  with large "V" chines to provide extra stability when fishing and also for the boat to sit level when beached. I had been toying with the idea of building a V Nose punt of my own design, but how do you know if the design will work, let alone can it be built?
It also had to be lightweight for its size, with a high freeboard, quick and easy in it's construction and easily handled by 2 people. Is this possible?   When I saw Marks web site and spoke to him, I asked him "Could he design the boat for me?". Well, I love what they've done! The interest shown in the design is great and it shows that Mark can turn a ham fisted amatuer designers sketch into a beautiful and sea worthy boat.
 We think it looks excellent."

The principles on which our boats are designed are for strength, safety, seaworthiness and comfort. We will not sacrifice these in order to gain high performance. Nevertheless, our boats have a reputation as excellent performers. They are also known for their strength.

Designed also for ease of construction for the first time builder, the Mangraove Jack 3.62 is light enough to be easily trailerable for adventures in distant places. But overall, it had to be simple and easy to build, without spending everything you have.

                                                                                    The Arrangement Plan

The brief called for interior to be clean and simple,  loads of room and also storage. Emphasis was given to having higher than normal sides and comfortable seating arangements utilizing swivel seats, without having your knees in your face. Within the seat base there are 2 large sealed lockers, for all those items you may want locked away, while still retaining the foam filled buoyancy compartments in the outer seat sections and also shelving along the side walls for all those bits and pieces that you want handy when fishing. She also has a raised sole for fishing and casting. The large bow seat also doubles as an anchor / storage locker as well.

Overall, the design had  to be kept simple, clean and functionable, for a great days fishing or simply out and about with the family.

                                                                                                   Performance

Running through HullSpeed (a part of our Maxsurf ship modeling program suite), the result is a light hull built in our standard material epoxy-glass-plywood composite construction. The deadrise is 45 degrees at the cutwater, about 10 degrees @ midship and 4 degrees at the transom, the Mangrove jack 3.62 has enough vee to handle choppy seas without problems and her moderate beam produces great stability and lift for planing at low speeds. She also incorporates  a "V" chine flat for stabiltiy and "on the rail" turning ability.

As the chine rise is very progressive, the Mangrove Jack 3.62 does not have an obvious hump in its transition from displacement speeds to planing, resulting in a good moderate speed boat. Overall, the Mangrove Jack 3.62 is able to maintain moderate speeds between planing and displacement without pushing a huge bow wave.

Australian Builders Plate
The purpose of the Australian Builders Plate
The Australian Builders Plate is a national initiative that will make boating safer by providing vital information about the capacity and capability of boats. The Australian Builders Plate requires boat builders to determine boat-specific information and display it on the plate in a standard format. The information that needs to be provided includes:

  • recommended maximum engine power rating and engine weight for outboard engines
  • recommended maximum person capacity and maximum load
    Flotation used (basic or level)

CHOOSING YOUR HP REQUIREMENTS

To determine speed and Hp requirements, simply look up on the graph what Hp you would prefer and scroll down to the speed given. This is for MAX Hp vs Speed.
For "cruising" speed, simply "multiply" the max Hp chosen by .8 and then note the speed for that given new HP.
Example:
Chosen Max Hp = 15,
Speed = 23 kts (27 mph/ 43 kph)
15 Hp (max) x .8 (80% throttle) = 12 Hp
refer graph: Cruising Speed = 21 kts (24 mph/ 39 kph)

NOTE: Figures provided above are based the vessel being loaded as per a normal days outing & based   on conservative figures
