@ WEB DESIGN BY BOWDIDGE MARINE DESIGNS

We have boat plans (both yacht designs, catamaran designs and power designs) for all sizes. From the 12ft Mushulu Dinghy stitch & glue yacht tender to the Oceansky 57 catamaran. We design timber boats, plywood boats, strip plank boats, fibreglass composite boats, steel and aluminum boats to very modern styling for both monohull designs or multihull designs, powerboat or sailboat and in round bilge, multi-chine or radius chine hull forms.

Designed for easy planing at low speeds, great stability whilst at rest, and  reduction in fuel consumption without compromising the strength, durability and safety of the design, careful consideration was given to loads of storage lockers, comfortable seating throughout and a stable platform for fishing or other recreational activities without compromising safety for those on board.
Designed also for ease of construction for the first time builder, the Mushulu 14 is light enough to be easily trailerable for adventures in distant places. But overall, it had to be simple and easy to build, without spending everything you have.

For the interior, it had to be clean and simple, with a loads of room and storage. Emphasis was given to having higher than normal sides and comfortable seating arangements, without having your knees in your face.

Within the seats there are 2 large sealed lockers, for all those items you may want locked away, while still retaining the foam filled buoyancy compartments in the outer seat sections, as required to comply with the standards. The bow seat also doubles as an anchor locker.

Overall, the design had  to be kept simple, clean and functionable, for a great days fishing or simply out and about with the family.

For those of us in North America, we frequently bemoan the lack of a good wooden fishing boat kit.  I’m sure there are some out there, but we’re always on the lookout for others. Clint Chase and I were discussing it Monday morning, and I pointed him to this. OK, it’s not readily apparent that she has an attractive shear, but she truly does.   It’s always nice to find a stitch-and-glue design, and this seems well designed for her purpose

                  Bob's Testimonial (NZ)
I'm enjoying building this boat. My first ever build was a 14ft Hartley back in the 1950s. Since then there have been several dinghies and catarmarans, even a 24ft. launch in double diagonal, which I lofted from a table of offsets. So I am finding Mark's plans extremely easy to follow and if I have a few questions, his replies are very quick.

I am building the Mushulu 14 because living in North Canterbury, I have to trail my present boat 1 hour either north or south to launch. Now I'll be able to launch off the beach 15 mins away and the fishing will be just as good.

                  Brad's Testimonial (Qld)

Received my plans from Mark earlier this week. Must say they are a lot more detailed than others i have seen. There is really no comparison when it comes to the detail included in the plans. Much easier than my 3 pages of lines and offsets I got with the Palm Beach 22' .

This project has been great fun. The only thing I've made in timber is a TV. cabinet (a square box), never done curves or angles, only used a bit of resin and fibre glass once at high school (1983) - haven't touched it since.
Marks drawings are really easy to follow and I took his advice to read the plans carefully. I've also listened to my old man's advice who's said over the years, measure twice, cut once!. Thanks dad - haven't made any stuff ups yet!

Mathew

               Mathew's Testimonial (SA)
Launching day was windy with rain squalls forcast .Garden island was our only ramp protected from 25 knot winds forcast. The launch went well, the boat looked good now for the big test out . Will it go as well as Mark  said it would. Two pulls and the motor starts.
Ten minutes idling a brand new motor. Off we go away from the protection of the mangroves, the choppy water was half a metre to a metre high ( 1.5ft to 3ft high) - good for a boat test

                Martin's Testimonial (SA)

Into the waves slow at first, no water came over us at all. Half throttle and out of the hole straight away and we are still both dry!
Back to idling for a few minutes as the motor is new. We turn around and go with the waves and we are still dry!  A quick burst at full throttle and we are flying and no pounding !!!  Next I went side on to the waves in neutral and sat on the side. There was not much laying over at all,  its really stable.

Back at the ramp and a few more photos taken by my partner Robyn, then back on the trailer before the rain starts again.
All in all it goes a lot better than my tinny.  Thanks Mark for your input and advise when ever I rang you

Martin

As these epoxy joins are much stronger than the plywood, the assembled hull is then completely fibreglassed for extra strength and easy maintenance, resulting in a boat with less maintenance and a better finish than a production fiberglass hull.

Required Skills:
All our stitch and glue boats are easy to build. No woodworking skills or special tools are required. The plans include all dimensions and patterns to cut all the hull parts flat on the shop floor.

CONSTRUCTION METHOD:
Built from marine or boatbuilding plywood and completely fibreglassed in an epoxy matrix both inside and outside, the Mushulu 14 was designed for very easy building: no compound curves, no unnecessary complications, ease of construction, easy maintenance and a long life.
The 1/4" (6mm) panels, cut flat from our expanded plates dimensioned drawings and bent around the temporary frames and fastened to the transom and bow with stitches
The plans show all dimensions needed for each method: accurate expanded plates dimensions and all bulkheads and transom dimensions with spacing for building on strongbacks if desired.
With no lofting, beveling or scarfing required, the sides and bottom panels are cut from standard 8x4 plywood (1.2m x2.4m) and joined with a simple fiberglass butt block. All seams are then taped with fiberglass and epoxy (see our "Boatbuilding Forum " section for details.)
