You've never Imagined.

I am building the Mushulu 14 because living in North Canterbury, I have to trail my present boat 1 hour either north or south to launch. Now I'll be able to launch off the beach 15 mins away and the fishing will be just as good.

This project has been great fun. The only thing I've made in timber is a TV. cabinet (a square box), never done curves or angles, only used a bit of resin and fibre glass once at high school (1983) - haven't touched it since.
Marks drawings are really easy to follow and I took his advice to read the plans carefully. I've also listened to my old man's advice who's said over the years, measure twice, cut once!. Thanks dad - haven't made any stuff ups yet!

Mathew

  Mushulu 14 Testimonials

Received my plans from Mark earlier this week. Must say they are a lot more detailed than others i have seen. There is really no comparison when it comes to the detail included in the plans. Much easier than my 3 pages of lines and offsets I got with the Palm Beach 22' .

I'm enjoying building this boat. My first ever build was a 14ft Hartley back in the 1950s. Since then there have been several dinghies and catarmarans, even a 24ft. launch in double diagonal, which I lofted from a table of offsets. So I am finding Mark's plans extremely easy to follow and if I have a few questions, his replies are very quick.

Into the waves slow at first, no water came over us at all. Half throttle and out of the hole straight away and we are still both dry!
Back to idling for a few minutes as the motor is new. We turn around and go with the waves and we are still dry!  A quick burst at full throttle and we are flying and no pounding !!!  Next I went side on to the waves in neutral and sat on the side. There was not much laying over at all,  its really stable.

Back at the ramp and a few more photos taken by my partner Robyn, then back on the trailer before the rain starts again.
All in all it goes a lot better than my tinny.  Thanks Mark for your input and advise when ever I rang you

Launching day was windy with rain squalls forcast .Garden island was our only ramp protected from 25 knot winds forcast. The launch went well, the boat looked good now for the big test out . Will it go as well as Mark  said it would. Two pulls and the motor starts.
Ten minutes idling a brand new motor. Off we go away from the protection of the mangroves, the choppy water was half a metre to a metre high ( 1.5ft to 3ft high) - good for a boat test

For those of us in North America, we frequently bemoan the lack of a good wooden fishing boat kit.  I’m sure there are some out there, but we’re always on the lookout for others. Clint Chase and I were discussing it Monday morning, and I pointed him to this. OK, it’s not readily apparent that she has an attractive shear, but she truly does.   It’s always nice to find a stitch-and-glue design, and this seems well designed for her purpose
